1. How did you become involved in the field of product management?
I didn’t know that product management existed in college. I stumbled into product management at Sunrun, my first start up job, working as a customer service rep. I was answering phone calls from escalated customers and realized that our customers had implacable pain points that stemmed from the core product. I began working with our product team to resolve those problems, which introduced me to the world of product management.
2. What do you enjoy most about what you do?
I love the dynamic, eclectic, problem-solving aspect of product management. I get to talk to diverse people–designers, engineers, researchers, content strategist–and synthesize information. As a PM, you are an arm chair psychologist and scientist who is always evolving and learning from people who are smarter than you.
3. What are the biggest challenges that businesses face today?
Businesses often struggle with solving a compelling problem. Often times, a company will engineer and craft the most beautiful solution and then fit that into solving a human problem. What humanity really needs are engineers, designers, and technocrats who understand the human problems first before building a solution. It all comes down to understanding your end user and shared humanity.
